Do's and Dont's Regarding Posting CV's online.
- Don’t put your full address. Include your town, county/country and first part of your postcode e.g. SN7.
- Don’t put your date of birth. You are not required to under the age discrimination rules anyway but anyone can work it out by the school dates or university degree dates enough to have a reasonable guess at how old you are. Don’t include your place of birth either.
- Don’t include references. Reputable agencies will want two referees normally but these should only be provided after the first interview as a rule.
- Don’t give bank details until you have started the role.
- Don’t include your National Insurance number. Again this isn’t necessary until you have started and need to be added to the payroll.
- Do include a phone number. From a recruitment perspective an agency will try to contact you by phone first so make sure it is a mobile or a phone with an answer phone.
- Do include an email address but be prepared to be spammed. Get a decent Anti Virus and anti spam filter for your PC. Putting your email address on public boards is a necessary evil and you can restrict what information is made public on job boards but you need to make it easy for an agency to contact you or they won’t bother.
- Don’t get carried away with including personal interests. If they are relevant to the role then you should definitely included but otherwise three at most is all that is necessary.
- Don’t include marital status or number of children unless there is some relevance to the role you are applying for.
- Don’t include your salary details.
